An Interview with Jeff Roe founder of Outlaw Laboratories

Standing small but strong for many years, Outlaw Laboratories is a soon to become a leading, Renaissance institution as it pushes ahead of the modern age with innovative perspective and unexplored content. This company is sure to turn heads in the coming months as Jeff Roe and his team, leads the company into a complete rebirth. With its pioneering talent, unmatched persistence, and current large-scale expansion, Outlaw Laboratories has become a force to be reckoned with in the television & film industry.

Emmy nominated and award-winning writer/director/producer Jeff Roe founded Outlaw Laboratories in 2005, when production budgets were up and financial worries were down. In the otherwise thorny years since, Outlaw has found promise in areas where others have not because of the modern ideas and unstoppable ahead-of-the-times forces of its executive team and founder.

Jeff Roe does it all with his elite team of artists to create work that is of original content and precise quality. Under Roe’s supervision of the entire creative process, Outlaw Laboratories serves as a full-service, one stop creative shop, producing short films, commercials, in-show packaging, and main title sequences of superior quality and unrivaled material.

Over the next five years, Outlaw Laboratories will develop a minimum of 10 feature films and will transform a once small company into a fully comprehensive and self-sufficient creative studio that will produce and distribute quality feature films for the immediate and foreseeable future.

How did you first become interested in film and the film business?

I have always been interested in film. I made made my first film in Junior High School - it was terrible. I moved on to college where I attended Cal Arts and studied Photography. Since then I have always worked in and around film. From being an usher at a movie theater, to projectionist, onto visual effects and post and now owning my own production company. As far as the business side, that comes with the turf. If you want to produce and direct your own films you need to grasp the business side of things as well. In the film world, art and commerce are inextricably bound.

What sort of stories or films interest you? 

This is the amazing thing about film (and story telling in general) you can be enamored by so many tales. From sci-fi to bio-pics if it’s a good story I can enjoy it. As for my own writing I tend to lean toward the darker side of life - the brutality of man - the dark places we all hold inside of us. But that is not to say I don’t enjoy other arenas such as comedy. I produce and direct a bunch of comedy stuff year round so I prefer to keep my feet firmly planted in a multitude of genres. I think doing so helps one understand the nature of story telling more so.

How did Outlaw Laboratories begin?

After years of being involved heavily in the post production world I had an opportunity to branch out and make my own films. This began with a small Documentary called “Stuntwood: The Birth, Life, and Death of a Skateboard” (Winner of Best Documentary 2007 X-Dance Film Festival) from there I continued on. After this win I did a job for Mandalay Entertainment where I met Tim Tortora. Tim and myself found that we had similar takes on how films can and should be made - tell good stories, run efficiently and most of all don’t hemorrhage money. With Tim’s business mindedness and my creative skill we joined forces and now have created the current inception of Outlaw Laboratories.

What kind of films do you plan to make?

We have a multitude of scripts in a variety of genres in different stages of development. And this goes back to the earlier question about my interest. I really look to guy like Robert Rodriguez and Troublemaker Studios as inspiration. He has the unique quality of being able to run the gamut. He moves from making the Grindhouse “Machete” straight into “Spy Kids 4” I truly respect that innate ability to switch gears and to still leave your mark on the film. I can only hope to do the same one day.

What will your average budgets be?

Lean and mean. We are living in the age where you don’t want to blow your budgets out of the water. Spend money where necessary but don’t be frivolous about it. This in turn can make all parties involved from crew to investors.

Will you be acquiring any films at festivals for distribution?

This is an option, once we find ourselves in the right position, that we would like to keep open for us.

Are you going to release films for online download at the same time as theatrical?

Our primary exhibition window is theatrical release, however all films are a case by case basis. If the most advantageous coarse of action is to release on multiple platforms at once then we are open to that idea.

What cities do you plan to target for release?

Definitely Los Angeles and New York. If we find success in the larger markets then we plan for a wider roll out. This again goes back to the idea of being smart on how your money is spent.

Will you do platform releases or exclusive?

Our ideal situation is to do things following the platform release model. Build the buzz - go wider as called for.

How do you view the current state of the independent film market?

Exciting! We are finding ourselves in the true digital age. We now have the opportunity to create things in a very inexpensive manner and self distribute via the internet or in a form of an App. I believe that we are beginning to see a new golden age of how stories can be told and released. It goes back to the old adage story is king. If you have a good story get out your iPhone shoot it and post it up. Just go for it. Creating it and figuring out how to do thing is the best film school you can come across.
