Horror films at Hollywood Film Festival!

The 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival at ArcLight Cinemas opens Oct. 23 with “Another Harvest Moon.” The festival lineup includes “The Assistant,” “Formosa Betrayed,� �Childless,� �Not Since You,� �Last Day of Summer,� and South Korea�s 2009 Academy Award foreign-language film submission, �Crossing,� as well as �Monday Before Thanksgiving,� directed and written by Courtney Cox, and �Glock,� directed, produced and written by Tom Everett Scott.

The festival will highlight comedic films including �Wild Girls Gone� with Amy Poehler, Scout�s Honor with Chris Kattan, and �Little Fish, Strange Pond� with Zach Galifianakis; and horror films including �The Rain,� starring David Carradine in one of his last screen performances.

In addition to screenings, a two-hour symposium on Saturday will focus on ending violence against women in Congo. Scheduled guests include Emile Hirsch, John Prendergast, Sonya Walger, and Bonnie Abaunza.

Tickets are available at ArcLightCinemas.com. The festival closes Oct. 25 with the Hollywood Discovery Awards for best feature, documentary, comedy, short subject, and music video.

The Night Shift, an indie horror/comedy coming soon!

Hi everyone,
Long-time lurker here. I wanted to share some info about a low budget indie feature I�m working on at the moment called The Night Shift. It�s about an undead cemetery caretaker, Rue Morgan, and his misadventures keeping the cemetery and its �residents� safe from the forces of evil while he pines for a second chance at life and the affections of the very much alive day-shifter, Claire Rennfield.

The film is a horror-adventure-comedy based on a very low budget short ($200 with a lot of iffy day for night � yeesh!) we made about two years ago that was very well received. The short, also titled The Night Shift, has appeared in several film fests across the country and was positively reviewed by Fangoria. We�re smack dab in the middle of pre-production on the feature at the moment and will begin principal photography on May 1st. The budget for the feature has been upped considerably, though it�s still a very low budget film. We�ve also found a lot of great, hard-working actors, crew members, make-up, visual effect and prop people that are going to make this a really fun and entertaining film. And that�s really all we�re trying to make � a fun film.

My crew and I jumped into this daunting endeavor after tiring of Hollywood and its never-ending remake/reboot/sequel machine. Don�t get me wrong, I have a few choice franchises that I follow closely and I love a rollicking, fun film as much as the next guy. But many of these �event� films seem to be getting dumber and dumber (Transformers). I�m a product of the �80s, so I grew up with a lot of Indy, Monster Squad, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Goonies and Ghostbusters - films that were fun but didn�t talk down to the audience or insult their intelligence (too much), possessed a certain magic and had a lot of heart. That�s the tone we�re hoping to recapture with The Night Shift. Fun, smart and entertaining with characters you get to know and, hopefully, feel for � something few studio films make us do these days, actually feel something.

Filming is expected to wrap by the beginning of July. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Academy Award�-winning supervising sound editor David E. Stone hosts an evening exploring the art and technology of sound in motion pictures and the important role it plays in shaping horror films. Film clips will trace the evolution of sound in horror films, from �The Phantom of the Opera� (1925) through the digital age of �The Blair Witch Project� (1999) and �Cloverfield� (2008).

Mark Mangini, three-time Oscar� nominee for sound effects editing, and Richard L. Anderson, two-time Oscar nominee for sound effects editing and Special Achievement Award winner, will take the audience behind the scenes to learn how sound effects were created for �Poltergeist� (1982), a film that elevated horror sound from B-movie status to full-scale modern multi-channel presentation.

Vanessa Theme Ament, foley artist, teacher and author (The Foley Grail) will take the stage to present the work of master foley artist John Post, who, in his work on such films as John Carpenter�s �The Thing� (1982), and in his role as trainer/mentor to other foley artists, influenced the way sound effects are created for horror films today and helped make foley a respected and necessary part of every horror soundtrack.

In addition, Oscar-winning production sound mixer Gene Cantamessa and supervising sound editor Don Hall will explore their work behind the scenes of �Young Frankenstein� (1974). Other special guests include sound effects editor and foley artist Louis Kleinman, sound rerecording mixer Christian Minkler, and sound effects wrangler Steve Lee.
