HOCKNEY

2014, 112 minutes, color, DCP | Directed by Randall Wright

In Hockney, the charismatic artist takes director Randall Wright on an exclusive tour of his archives and into his studio, where he still paints seven days a week. The film looks back at Hockney’s formative years in the British Pop Art scene and his experience of being a gay man as the AIDS crisis took hold, as well as his years working in California. A window into the artist’s work, the film weaves together a portrait that includes frank interviews with close friends and never-before-seen footage.

Released by FILM MOVEMENT, Hockney has been highly praised. Writing in the New York Times, Stephen Holden called it “Entertaining….Like most of its subject’s art, Hockney is a sunny film.” Artforum’s Tony Pipolo called it “A whirlwind tour with firsthand knowledge of the man and his work.” The film is shown in conjunction with the special exhibition, David Hockney: 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life.
