11TH ANNUAL MODS & ROCKERS FESTIVAL

Synopsis:

THURSDAY, AUGUST 26TH TO SUNDAY, AUGUST 29TH

EGYPTIAN & AERO THEATRES

The Cinematheque is delighted to present our 11th Mods & Rockers Festival, in which we celebrate the long and exciting career of rock documentarian and Oscar-winner Murray Lerner! We’re kicking off at the Egyptian Theatre with a 40th anniversary salute to the Isle of Wight Festival with Lerner’s MESSAGE TO LOVE, the spellbinding rock documentary that captures performances by such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison (only months before their deaths), plus the Los Angeles premiere of Lerner’s MILES ELECTRIC, an incredible portrait of Miles Davis at the height of his “Bitches Brew” glory. Next up, we have the West Coast premieres of THE MOODY BLUES: THRESHOLD OF A DREAM and MELLODRAMA: THE MELLOTRON MOVIE, a double feature celebrating 45 years of The Moody Blues and 50 years of the Mellotron with Lerner and Moody Blues founder Mike Pinder in person! Following this is a double feature of Lerner’s JIMI HENDRIX: BLUE WILD ANGEL and THE WHO: LISTENING TO YOU, incredible docs digitally restoring both Hendrix’s and The Who’s last performances.

The grand conclusion of Mods & Rockers is a “Folk, Blues and Roots” triple bill extravaganza! Included is the Los Angeles premiere of Lerner’s LEONARD COHEN: LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT 1970, BOB DYLAN: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR and the classic chronicling of the Newport Folk Festival, FESTIVAL, with performances and interviews with Joan Baez, Donovan, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, and most famously, a newly-electric Bob Dylan. Don’t miss out on any of these terrific screenings!

THURSDAY, AUGUST 26TH AT 7:30PM

40th Anniversary Salute to Isle of Wight Festival! Reunion of Stars From 1970 - Plus Unseen Outtakes!

MESSAGE TO LOVE
Dir. Murray Lerner
1970, MLF, 120 min.

The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was the largest rock event of the era, with more than 600,000 attendees, featuring the last major performances by Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. Oscar winning director Murray Lerner (FROM MAO TO MOZART: ISAAC STERN IN CHINA) beautifully captured the performances by the cream of the rock royalty crop - and also discreetly documented the greed of promoters and festival attendees that helped kill off the 1960s hippie dream. Includes The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Jethro Tull, ELP, Free, Ten Years After, The Moody Blues, John Sebastian, Donovan, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Plus previously unseen outtakes!

MILES ELECTRIC
Dir. Murray Lerner
2004, MLF, 90 min.

Incredible documentary capturing Miles Davis at the height of his “Bitches Brew” jazz-rock-free-form fusion best. Built around Davis’ legendary Isle of Wight performance with a band that included Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, the film provides insight into his groundbreaking odyssey into electric music. Includes interviews with Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell.

**IN PERSON: Director Murray Lerner, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger (The Doors), Keith Emerson (ELP), and Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 27TH AT 7:30PM

Celebrating 45 Years of the Moody Blues with Founding Member Mike Pinder in Person!

THE MOODY BLUES: THRESHOLD OF A DREAM
Dir. Murray Lerner
2009, MLF, 80 min.

Classic concert performance by the Moody Blues in 1970 at the height of their ascendancy as symphonic-rock pioneers. Includes all their key hits, including “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Question,” “Ride My See Saw,” plus interviews that reflect on the band's 45-year history from their R&B roots (“Go Now”) in 1965 onwards.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Mellotron with Docu & Live Demo! West Coast Premiere!

MELLODRAMA: THE MELLOTRON MOVIE
Dir. Dianna Dilworth
2010, Bazillion Points, 75 min.

Moody Blues keyboard player Mike Pinder introduced the Beatles to the Mellotron; they used it on Sgt. Pepper and from there it became the definitive prog-rock instrument. This doc chronicles the fascinating history and features Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Mike Pinder (Moody Blues), Rod Argent (The Zombies), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Ian McDonald (King Crimson) and members of Maroon 5, Big Elf and Yes.

**IN PERSON: Moody Blues Co-Founder Mike Pinder, Director Murray Lerner, Steve Frothingham (Big Elf), Author Brian Kehew (Recording the Beatles) and Director Dianna Dilworth.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28TH AT 7:30PM

The evening will have a fun twist as we stage a replay of the famous 1967 coin toss between Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend to determine which artist would perform first at Monterey. (Neither act wanted to go on second, figuring the other’s theatrics would be tough to follow.) Hendrix producer Eddie Kramer and Who engineer Cy Langston will toss a coin in front of the audience to determine which act's film goes first! Plus rare Who outtakes!

JIMI HENDRIX: BLUE WILD ANGEL
Dir. Murray Lerner
2002, MLF, 80 min.

THE WHO: LISTENING TO YOU
Dir. Murray Lerner
2004, MLF, 80 min.

Three years after their historic breakthrough appearances on the same bill at the 1967 Monterey Festival, and one year after their triumphant performances at 1969's Woodstock Festival, The Who and Jimi Hendrix found themselves on the same festival lineup for one last time - at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The Hendrix show turned out to be his final major performance. Director Murray Lerner captured both artists in full-flight. Both films feature digitally restored film and audio (both mixed into mind-blowing 5.1).

**IN PERSON: Eddie Kramer (audio engineer/producer for Jimi Hendrix), Cy Langston (audio technician for The Who), and Director Murray Lerner.

**Mods & Rockers continues Sunday, August 29th at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica!
