DIR: George Stevens SCR: Michael Wilson, Harry Brown (from the play An American Tragedy by Patrick Kearney; adapted from the novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser)

In George Stevens's adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's classic An American Tragedy, George Eastman (Montgomery Clift) is a poor factory worker who is forced to choose between prosperity and passion, between rich Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor) and his pregnant lower-class girlfriend Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters). The film is a directorial showpiece, with its enormous closeups and slow, overlapping dissolves, and it garnered Stevens his first Oscar--one of six that the film received at the 1952 Academy Awards ceremony.

Elizabeth Taylor is the #7 female legend on the AFI 100 Years...100 Stars list, and the film is #53 on AFI 100 Years...Passions.
