Abismos de Pasión

(1954, 90 minutes, black and white, Spanish with English subtitles)

Taxco, the picturesque hometown of silversmith Antonio Pineda, serves as the backdrop for director Luis Buñuel’s motion picture based on Emily Brontë’s classic novel Wuthering Heights. Enjoy the tale of the all-consuming love between well-born Catalina/Cathy and her former stable boy and childhood sweetheart Alejandro/Heathcliff. UCLA film professor Alejandro Pelayo introduces the film with a discussion of how Taxco became a favorite film locale for American and Mexican filmmakers in the 1940s and 1950s.
