Dir. Chris Kraus, Germany/Austria/Estonia, 2010, 129 min, digital proj.
It is the eve of World War I in Germany and 14-year-old Oda Schaefer - who would later grow up to be the famed German poet – goes to live with her father.
Ebbo is a crackpot doctor living in a wonkily deformed house, who has fallen from grace among German scientists due to his seemingly gory and inhumane medical methods.
Filmmaker and former opera director Chris Kraus elegantly shows us a community on the verge of war, where the bizarre and grotesque lurk in close quarters with the pure curiosity and kindness of a young girl.
Winner of four German Film Awards:
Richy Müller (Best Actor in Supporting Role)
Daniela Knapp (Cinematography)
Gioia Raspé (Best Costume Design)
Silke Buhr (Best Set Design)
