This classic blockbuster comedy stars Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey, a down-and-out actor who reinvents himself professionally as a woman when faced with the career-breaking obstacle of his own difficult reputation.
After landing a role in a popular soap opera, Dorsey’s career takes off in his new identity as Dorothy Michaels. Faced with a new perspective on gender roles, he battles the show’s sexist director while falling for his younger co-star, portrayed by Jessica Lange.
Touching on themes of sexism, class, and the politics of the entertainment industry, Tootsie strikes a delicate balance between absurd humor and social commentary.
In his original 1982 review, Roger Ebert called Tootsie a “movie with a capital M” for evoking the heartfelt comedy of the 1940s.
The excellent supporting cast includes Dabney Coleman, Teri Garr, George Gaynes, Bill Murray, Charles Durning, director Sydney Pollack, and Geena Davis in her big-screen debut.
The film received ten Oscar nominations and one win by Lange for Best Supporting Actress.
Evening Sponsors: Cathy and Steve Needleman
