Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot (2015)

Written by Phil Thompson

Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot is a basketball documentary about Dirk Nowitzki, thirteen-time NBA All-Star, and League and Finals MVP.  We follow Nowitzki from his humble German “hoop dreams” to superstardom in the NBA.  The documentary centers on the relationship between Dirk Nowitzki and Holger Geschwindner, his personal coach and mentor, but also delves into Nowitzki’s associations, both personal and professional.  For additional insight, Director Sebastian Dehnhardt interviews Nowitzki contemporaries Kobe Bryant, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Michael Finley, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, and others.

One of the documentary’s highlights includes an interview with Ernie Butler, the first American to play professional basketball in Germany and was a teammate of Geschwindner.  Butler compares basketball to jazz music, in that both require improvisation.  Butler contends that basketball players, like jazz musicians, have the skills to play, but need to be spontaneous as much of a game is unscripted.  Butler praises Holger Geschwindner for his “creativity” with the ball and credits Geschwindner as the creator of Nowitzki’s “perfect shot.”

The documentary covers the Dallas Mavericks playoff runs starting in 2006 when they lost to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals to the 2010- 2011 Season when they defeated the Miami Heat to win their first NBA Championship.  Viewers will also enjoy the documentary’s lighter moments, including Nowitzki’s appearance on the Conan show.
