Tonight I attended the final night of the Lon Chaney/Tod Browning series at UCLA and saw THE SHOW (1927) and FREAKS (1932). I was excited to see THE SHOW since that film is pretty rare. Now perhaps I know why…..it was strange and disappointing film to say the least. I am a big fan of Browning and I absolutely love John Gilbert and Renee Adore, so perhaps I went into the film expecting too much. The plot revolves around a carnival barker named “Cock Robin” who re-enacts the beheading of John the Baptist with the help of Salome (Renee Adore). When Salome tries to rekindle her affair with Cock Robin, her current lover “The Greek” (Lionel Barrymore) commits murder and frames Cock Robin for the crime in hopes of getting him out of the way.
