SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Greg Proops Film Club

SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS, 1941, Universal, 98 min. Dir. Preston Sturges.

“You know, the nice thing about buying food for a man is that you don’t have to laugh at his jokes.” –Veronica Lake (The Girl).

John L. Sullivan (the tall, gorgeous and hilarious Joel McCrae) makes fluffy comedies like SO LONG, SARONG, HEY, HEY IN THE HAYLOFT and ANTS IN YOUR PLANTS OF 1939! But with the War and the Depression and encroaching evil, he feels he must make a serious picture that reflects the times.

His producers, friends and butler all think it is an awful idea, but he is an entitled, rich white guy, so off he goes dressed in hobo clothes provided by the wardrobe department. On the road he meets The Girl, (The fabulous, sultry Veronica Lake); she buys him breakfast and the screwballgame game is on.

We cross the USA and find charitable black churches, crowded homeless shelters, nice lunch vendors and brutal chain gangs.

Sturges mixes, sexual tension, middle-class moralizing, zany character actors and some terrible realities for an unforgettable comedy that flies like the wind.

Come and experience the Greg Proops Film Club Podcast before and thrill to this American comedy classic.

Program begins with a live podcast by comedian Greg Proops. Feature starts at 8:00 PM. Free to American Cinematheque Members!
