REVENGE / THE DESCENT / MAD MAX: FURY ROAD BLACK & CHROME / ALIENS
Co-presented by Neon, Shudder and the Etheria Film Festival

Advance Screening! REVENGE, 2018, Neon, 108 min. Dir. Coralie Fargeat. Debut director Coralie Fargeat announces her stunning arrival, painting a crimson canvas of hypnotic beauty and bloody retribution in this razor-sharp feminist subversion of the revenge-thriller. Jen (fearlessly embodied by Matilda Lutz, RINGS) is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend that is suddenly disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts in the house until the situation abruptly – and viciously – intensifies, culminating in a shocking act in which Jen is left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, Jen survives and reemerges with a relentless, wrathful intent: revenge. A white-knuckle tale of transgression and transformation, REVENGE gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.

THE DESCENT, 2005, Lionsgate, 99 min. Dir. Neil Marshall. Six women exploring a cave system in the Appalachian Mountains become trapped inside – and they’re not alone; as they struggle to find a way out, the group is pursued by flesh-eating humanoids. Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza and Alex Reid star in this creepy and claustrophobic British shocker. “A sensationally entertaining escalation of frights, the kind that make you wiggle and squirm as you alternately laugh at your own gullibility and marvel at the filmmaker’s cunning and craft.” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times.

B&W Version! MAD MAX: FURY ROAD BLACK & CHROME, 2015, Warner Bros./Village Roadshow, 120 min. Dir. George Miller. More than 30 years beyond THUNDERDOME, George Miller (Academy Award nominee for Best Director) revisits his post-apocalyptic demolition derby. Tom Hardy takes the reins as drifter ex-cop “Mad” Max Rockatansky, whose wasteland survival skills are matched by those of Charlize Theron as Furiosa; together they hope to liberate the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne – original MAD MAX baddie the Toecutter) in Miller’s critically acclaimed, nonstop thrill ride.

ALIENS, 1986, 20th Century Fox, 137 min. Dir. James Cameron. Seven years after Ridley Scott’s original ALIEN, James Cameron took the reins with this sinister, explosive WWII movie in space, about a platoon of U.S. Marines stranded on planet LV-426. Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley is darker and richer here – haunted by alien nightmares, going face-to-face with her deepest fears. Watch for Cameron’s flawless feel for detail and pacing as he builds suspense scene by scene (the creatures don’t even appear until almost 50 minutes into the movie!) With Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Paul Reiser.
