The Last Bookstore is pleased to present Mallory O’Meara and her new book on Milicent Patrick, the forgotten feminist trailblazer, one of Disney’s first animators and the only woman to design one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie monsters, The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Join us to learn more as Mallory discusses her book, The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick, with her Reading Glasses co-host Brea Grant!

For Mallory O’Meara, her first viewing of The Creature from the Black Lagoon kindled an obsession. She is far from alone in her admiration of this fan favorite: Auteur Guillermo del Toro has acknowledged its influence on The Shape of Water, his 2017 Academy Award winner. But for Mallory, the real aha moment came when she found out that a woman named Milicent Patrick had been the mastermind behind the titular character.

Fueled by insatiable curiosity and emotional investment (see the exquisite tattoo she sports on her arm of Milicent and her famous creation), Mallory embarked on a quest to learn everything she could about Milicent Patrick. Now the filmmaker and “Reading Glasses” podcast host shares her findings in The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick, which excavates a past buried by misogyny as it taps into the zeitgeist.

In this resonant, voice-driven narrative, Mallory blends her twist-filled search for the elusive Milicent—one of Disney’s first female animators and the only woman to create one of Hollywood’s classic movie monsters—with a thoughtful reflection on her own challenges in the same sexist industry more than sixty years later. Fittingly, Milicent’s untold story is the stuff of a major motion picture, from her slow but steady rise to her fall orchestrated by a powerful man at Universal Studios to her disappearance into obscurity. At last however, The Lady from the Black Lagoon sets the record straight, reclaiming its leading lady’s role in cinema history and showcasing her enduring legacy.

Drawing from previously untapped material and revelatory access to Milicent’s niece, The Lady from the Black Lagoon delivers a well-timed if overdue postscript to an extraordinary life and a groundbreaking career.

Mallory O’Meara is an author, screenwriter and genre film producer. Every week, she co-hosts the literary podcast Reading Glasses. Whether it’s for the screen or the page, Mallory seeks creative projects imbued with the weird; horror and monsters are her passion. She lives in Los Angeles with her partner and their collection of books and cats. The Lady from the Black Lagoon is her first book.
