The Silent Treatment: THE WIND (1928)

Marked by stunning, on-location cinematography in the California landscapes of Bakersfield and the Mojave Desert, The Wind tells the story of Letty Mason (Lillian Gish), a Virginia native who embarks on a new life at her cousin’s ranch in the isolated town of Sweetwater. Nominated into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1993, MGM’s 1928 production of The Wind marks Swedish director Victor Sjöström’s last surviving picture from the silent cinema period, and the last leading performance of star Lillian Gish before transitioning into sound pictures.
Screened in 35mm with original music and sound effects, courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.
